Day 23 Hospital to Samos

May 7. Saturday

Hospital  to  Samos

Unfortunately I had my Iphone4 on airport setting which prevented me from getting a GPS track of this walk.

We started walking on a very blustery windy day. Down the mountain we went. We took all the alternative paths, which are detours off the main road. They are generally beautiful and so we went through small farms which were lush and green with cows and horses. The downside of these paths are that they are mostly dirt tracks that have eroded because of all the rain. So they are covered with loose rocks. The footing is unstable especially since it rained last night and everything was wet and slippery. We tripped are way down the mountain for about 5 hours. It was unbelievable scenery, but I was glad to see the bottom. We stopped at a store for some food. We marched on to Samos.  Once again there are 2 routes. We took the route by the river, 10 k. It started out on the road and then a good dirt track led us down by the river. We walked there enjoying the sound and beauty of the river, the ferns and grass fields. The last 2k was a rocky path again. We finly arrived in Samos. It is a small hamlet that centers around the oldest Benedictine monestary. We could stay at the monastery.  There are 80 beds and it is donation  only. But we were tired and got a room over a bar with wifi for 32 euros. Wonderful shower, a place to wash your clothes and a small kitchen where we made lunch.  We walked 17 miles and it was a long 17.
