May 6 Pereje to Hospital
We started our day's walk with trepidation. After all the town, O'Cebreiro the Galician king of the mountain, our initial destination, was at the top of a rather steep climb over cobbled pathways. It is down hill from here all the way to the sea. Joan has a nose of a polar bear when it comes to scenting an open panderia. For the very first time we indulged in hot coffee and delicious pastry without our packs on. It delightfully energized us as we stretched for the top. Now, in our adjoining beds with all others across the road at the bar, we are reading books purchased from amazon before we left California. The perfect restful act to let the body redeem itself for tomorrow's challenge to reach Samos.

Pereje to Hospital
What a lovely day to walk up the mountain to O'Cebreiro. It was a sunny day with gorgeous views along the way. It took us about 5 hours to cover the 14 miles. We then dropped down 3 miles to a small albergue with only 20 beds in a tiny village called Hospital de la Condesa. This place used to have one of the oldest pilgrim hospitals. O'Cebreiro is the start of the Galician region. They say that the countryside is reminiscent of other Celtic lands. The land is green and lush with small farms and farm animals. The weather is usually full of rain and thunderstorms with thick mountain fog. Galicia is suppose to have many of the physical attributes of western Ireland. We explored O'Cebreiro which is a very different village. The church is from the 9 th century. We stopped to eat and tried their local soup, caldo gallego, a very hot chicken based soup with garbonzo beans and greens. it was delicious and warms you up immediately. We would have stayed up there but the albergue had not yet opened. A bunch of us came down the mountain and are all settled in for the night. Tomorrow we will go further down the mountain to Samos.
