The first way is to take the metro to Puerta del Sol around which there are many places to stay. You can take the metro to Atocha from Puerta del Sol the day of your departure. The walk is 1.2 miles
The second way is to take the airport bus to the Atocha train station. There are inexpensive places to stay within easy walk to the train station.
